Why use a finishing polish?

Car polish works by using abrasive particles to level the surface of your clearcoat, removing the micro-scratches, swirl marks, oxidation, and surface contaminants that dull paintwork over time. A good car detailing polish restores clarity and depth to your paint before a wax or ceramic coating is applied to seal and protect the result.

Polishing is a staged process. Heavier compounds remove more material and correct deeper defects but leave a surface that needs refining. Finishing polishes use finer abrasives to remove the marks left by compounds and bring the paint to a high gloss. Many professional detailers work through two or three stages: cut, medium, and finish, with each stage refining the result of the last.

What is the difference between a car polish and a car wax?

Can I apply car polish by hand?

Do I need to polish before applying a ceramic coating?

How do I know which cut level I need?
Start by assessing the level of defects on your paintwork. Light swirls and fine marks can usually be addressed with a finishing polish alone. Deeper scratches and heavier oxidation need a compound or medium cut first, followed by a finishing polish to refine the surface.

We always recommend to start with a medium to fine compound like bestselling Koch-Chemie Fine Cut F6.01. More often than not, this will provide the correction you need. If you are still struggling with imperfections, we suggest you move to a compound with heavier cut. Usually, the heavier cut, the lower the gloss level. Refine down through to a fine cut & finish compound for best results.
